The Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum for Applied Art), located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany has launched April 16, Dieter Rams 'Looking Back and Ahead' a unique exhibition to celebrate Dieter Rams lifetime achievement. It will be open until August 8, 2021.
The most celebrated German industrial designer and most influential creator of 350 product designs will celebrate his 88th birthday on May 20.
Rams have lived with his wife Ingeborg in the same house for many years in the colourful town of Kronberg im Taunus, north of Frankfurt. They led very private lives, but his contribution exceeds him as his influence remains present in most product designs we love, from our iPhones to house appliances and furniture.
Enduring, lasting, timeless.
The more we explored his designs, the more we realized his omnipresence in everything we use and cherish as he emphasized that Good Design should have as little Design as possible. That is the timeless 10th principle of Good Design he established.
Less but better.
He designed, delivered honesty and innovations with clarity and a great sense of aesthetics in every product. His unobtrusive approach presented a long-lasting purpose in every detail.
He inspired and influenced generations of designers across cultural boundaries with a simple message, less but better. Good Design is as little design as possible.
He is an advocate for the Environment and stresses preservation and pollution should be central and present in the designer's mind, which is the 9th of his ten principles of Good Design.
